De Bry, Theodore. Delineatio Insvlae do Cerne, Alias Mavritivs Dictae
(Frankfurt, 1601). This map, from De Brys, Petits Voyages, Part
4, is the first printed map of Mauritius, published just three years after the Dutch
landing in 1598 at the south-east harbor of Grand Port. As Basil Lubbock points out
in his book, Old Ship Prints, the map, with clarity and skill, does two quite
distinct thingsthe records an achievement (eleven ships are shown in the harbor) and
it presents sailing directions for those seeking an appropriate anchorage. Thus landmarks
include palm trees and mountains, a freshwater stream, islets where tortoises can be
found, and a secret position where articles were left for later venturers. In
addition to the map, a facsimile of the title page is supplied. A core item for
Mauritiana collections, rarely offered. $750
Isle Mahe and the Mascarenes. This is a French map (hand-dated, 1819)
showing the Mascarenes, St.Brandon, Sable, Agalega, and the Saya de Malha, with a large
compass rose. By far the most pronounced feature of the map, however, is a large inset of
Isle Mahe. The overall map is 14 ½ x 10 inches; the Mahe inset is 7 ½ x 4 ½
inches. A lovely map, in color. SOLD

The map is beautifully decorative--surrounded by fashionable dwellings,
seascapes, volcanic peaks, elaborate flora, mother and child, plus insets of
Parny and Bertin. There are about 24
lines of statistical information at the bottom. 17 x 12 inches, with outline color.
The one page of text from the Atlas is also included. $150 (I

Tallis, John. Islands in the Indian Ocean (London, John Tallis & Co.,
1851). Map drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin; vignettes drawn and engraved by H.
Winkles. There is a detailed map of Mauritius set in and five vignettes:
Native Village, Madagascar; Point de Galle, Ceylon; Port Louis, Mauritius; North Beach,
Prince of Wales Island; and Fall of the River Roche, Isle of Bourbon. From
Talliss, The Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World, generally
regarded as one of the great decorative atlases of the nineteenth century. 14 ¼ x
10 ¾ inches with the distinctive Tallis outline color. $150

An Indian Slaves Autobiography: Facsimiles of a Series of Sketches
made by "Billy King" a Liberated Slave to Illustrate his Capture, Captivity,
and Liberation by an English Man-of-War, from The Graphic
(November 25, 1893). There are six remarkable drawing, each with
accompanying text. The drawings were submitted by "a large employer of
labour in the colony of Mahe, Seychelles" where the freed slaves were taken.
