94. Jansson, Jan/Abraham Ortelius. Erythraei Sive Rvbri Maris Periplvs. Olim Ab Arriano Descriptvs. Nvnc Vero Ab Arbah Ortelio ex Eodem Delineatvs. (Amsterdam, ca. 1640). As the title indicates, this is Ortelius’s famous map of the Indian Ocean (1597) as slightly modified by Jan Jansson. The main alteration was the deletion of an inset of the Mediterranean World at the bottom center of the 1597 map, and its replacement there by a textual insert that had been located in China in the 1597 map. The result is a much more handsome map. Centered on the Maldives, the map contains the Indian Ocean and the east African coast as far south as northern Madagascar, Arabia and the Gulf, the subcontinent, Taprobana, and a rather speculative Sumatra attached to the mainland, and perhaps Java, with sailing ships, sea monsters, etc., with two circular inserts in the top corners of the North Pole and Northwest Africa.
