This is a French map (hand-dated, 1819) showing the Mascarenes, St.Brandon, Sable, Agalega, and the Saya de Malha, with a large compass rose. By far the most pronounced feature of the map, however, is a large inset of Isle Mahe. The overall map is 14 ½ x 10 inches; the Mahe inset is 7 ½ x 4 ½ inches. A lovely map, in color. $225285. A spare outline map of the entire Indian Ocean region from Southern Africa to Hollandia Nova. Includes a compass rose and three sailing ships. The map is said to come from a 1692 Bible. B/w, 11 ¼ x 7 ¼ inches. $200295. Merian, Matthaus. Goa. (Frankfurt, 1628). A wonderful birds-eye town plan of Goa by the famous Swiss engraver, who was also the son-in-law of Theodore De Bry. The plan also appeared in Gottfrieds Archontologia (1649). There is a cartouche identifying 43 buildings and the plan includes the harbor full of ships, a royal seal, a small compass rose, and even two elephants working on the harbor.
