Parallel text in English and Afrikaans. This book and the fifty cards offer a history of the harbor works in Table Bay and the Foreshore Project, which transformed Cape Town in the 1930s. 75. Der plumpe Dronte (Didus ineptus). An original antique color lithograph (12 x 9 inches) from Leopold Josef Fitzinger, Bilder-Atlas zur wissenschaftlich-popularen Naturgeschichte der Vogel in ihren sammtlichen Hauptformen (A Pictorial Atlas of the Natural History of Birds) (Vienna, Druck und Verlag der Kaiserlich Koniglichte Hof- und Staatsdruckerei, 1864). Fitzinger was a physician, naturalist, and zoologist whose contributions to biology were honored by academies in both Europe and America; he was the curator of the reptile and mammal collection of the Imperial and Royal Zoological Court Cabinets in Austria from 1844-1861; he published several significant scientific books classifying reptiles, birds, and amphibians. A facsimile of the title page is included. $375

Twenty-four aquarelles de Cheriane; legendes d’Andre Demaison. This is a 14 x 10 inch booklet with 24 colored plates; each plate has a tissue guard and detailed description. The binding is hand stitched; the cover is ragged but the plates are in fine condition. The plates are largely views and include: Tamatave (3), Diego-Suarez, Nossi-Be, Majunga (3), and Fort Dauphin. I cannot find a record of this book at the BL, LOC, Yale, etc. $450
