22.          Gerbault, Alain.  In Quest of the Sun:  The Journal of the “Firecrest”  (Garden City, NY, Doubleday, Doran & Co, 1930).  1st edn, 8vo, 303 pp, 15 illus, decorative hard cover, endpaper map.  This is Gerbault’s journal of his single-handed trip around the world from 1924-1929. Pages 220-260 (June 1927 to March 1928) find him in the Indian Ocean including: Keeling-Cocos, East Indies, Rodriguez, Reunion, Durban, and Cape Town.  $20

25.           Hachisuka, Masauji.  The Dodo and Kindred Birds; or The Extinct Birds of the Mascarene Islands (London, H. F. & G. Witherby, Led, 1953).  1st edn, 4to, 250 pp, 22 full-page plates, 10 in color; 35 drawings, teg, gilted dodo on cover and gilt lettering on spine, dj.  A celebrated work on the dodos of Mauritius and Reunion, the solitaire of Rodrigues and Reunion, and various other extinct birds of the Mascarenes. This is one of the three great books on the dodo (the others Strickland, 1848; and Owen, 1866) and is coveted collectors and research institutions.  The book was published in a limited edition of 485; this copy is unnumbered. $2750

28.          Honwana, Luis  Bernado, Per Kraus, and others.  Ilha de Mocambique Relatorio—Report 1982-85 (Mozambique, Secretaria de Estado da Cultura; Denmark, Arkitektskolen I Aarhus, 1985).  1st edn, 4to, 224 pp,  hundreds (thousands?) of drawings, maps,  and photos, decorative paper cover.   This book is a  architectural survey of every structure on Mozambique Island undertaken over a three year period by a Danish team in collaboration with the Mozambican Secretariat for Culture.  This is a brilliant historical and architectural study with parallel text in English and Portuguese.  $100

30.          By a Lady.  Life at the Cape A Hundred Years Ago (Cape Town, C. Struik, 1963).  Reprint of letters published in the Cape Monthly Magazine in 1871-1872,  8vo,   119 pp,  reproduction of 16 full-page illustrations drawn by Thomas Bowler, dj.  The text  comprises ten letters which the Lady wrote to her sister describing life in Cape Town in the early 1860s.   $35

Page.   The English Pilot, The Third Book.  Describing the Sea-Coasts,…The Islands,…and Ports in the Oriental Navigation (London,  1743).  In three parts:  1.  Shewing the Nature and Properties of Winds and Monsoons in the Navigation from England to the East-Indies…; 2.  Containing neceffary Instructions for failing between England and the East-Indies in the Spring and the Fall; and 3.  Defcribing the Sea-Coafts, Capes, Headlands, Streights, Soundings, Sands, Shoals, Rocks and Dangers.  The Iflands, Bays, Roads, Harbours, and Ports from Cap Bonaesperance all over the Oriental Ocean.  80 pp, folio (pages are 19 ½ x 11 ½ inches), paper wrappers.  The pages largely contain detailed text, but there are also over 100 maps and sight-lines including: Mohilia, Joanna, Mauritius, Diego Raies (Rodriques), Don Mafcharinhas (Reunion), Socotra, Aden, Maculla Bay, Sharar, Dofar, Diu, St. Thome (Madras), Pullacat, Palmiras, Sumatra, Pulo Parcelar, Carimon, Banca, Paffage Island, Pulo Timoan, Patany, Pulo Condore, Canton, Ladarones, Lantoun, south coast of Borneo, etc.  There are three pages at the end with  longitude and latitude readings covering the entire region. 61.           Bellin, Jacques Nicolas.  Carte de la Coste Orientale d’Afrique, from Prevost’s, Histoire Generale des Voyages, vol. 1 (Paris, c. 1764).  Copper plate engraving, 9 ¾ x 7 ¾ inches, later hand color.  A finely detailed map of the East African coast from the Red Sea, Moka,  and the Horn of Africa south to the Quirimbo islands in Northern Mozambique, and including Socotora, Pemba, Zanzibar, the Comoros, a compass rose and a decorative cartouche.   $125

 

62.           Bellin, Jacques Nicolas.  Representation du Cours ordinaire des Vents de Traverse qui regnent le long  des Cotes dans la Mer Atlantique & celle des Indes (Paris, 1757).  Copper plate engraving, 11 ¾ x 6 inches, b/w.  An unusual map centered on the Africa continent but focused on showing the prevailing wind directions throughout the tropical regions of both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.  $100

 

63.           Bonne, Rigobert.  Terre de Kerguelen, Appellee par M. Cook, Isle de la Desolation; Plan du Havre de Noel  dans la Terre de Kerguelen; Plan du Port Palliser dans la Terre de Kerguelen; Isles du Prince Edouard (Paris, 1788).  Copper plate engraving, 13 ½ x 9 ¼ inches, later hand color.  On a single sheet there is the primary map of Kerguelen Island with a beautiful compass rose, accompanied by smaller maps of Port Palliser, Havre de Noel, and Isles du Prince Edouard.  $50  I also have a b/w version for $35.

 

64.           Kitchin, Thomas.  A Chart of all the Known Islands off the Coaft of Zenjibar & Madagascar lying in the way to India.  Drawn from the French Chart of the Eaftern Ocean Publish’d in 1740 by Order of the Count de Maurepas, improved from particular Surveys and regulated by  Astronomical Obfervations (London, c 1752).  Copper plate engraving, 11 x 9 ½ inches, b/w.  A fine map of the Southwest Indian Ocean including the East African coast from Lamu/Pate south to Mozambique and including Madagascar, the Mascarenes, Comoros, Amirantes and other islands of Seychelles, Diego Garcia and the Chagos, with a compass rose and rhumb lines.  $150
